Cam Reddish: A Star in The Making
After two effortless 30+ point performances at Slam Dunk to The Beach in Lewes, DE, I caught up with the 6’8 SF Cam Reddish. One of the top players in his class, and according to some, including me, THE top player in this year’s senior class. Not only is he one of the top players, his interviews show he is one of the top young men in the class of 2018 as well. In the first matchup for Reddish and his Westtown School teammates they faced an interesting Dillard (FL) squad. The Dillard HS Panthers roster consists of 4 Division 1 Football commits including senior Bryce Oliver who is committed to play Wide Receiver at The University of Kentucky. Reddish found himself matched up with Oliver almost every time down the floor, including once of note where Oliver began to clap at Cam which is daring thing to do given the abilities of the Duke commit. I asked Cam about this experience and whether it happens often now. He said very calmly “I’m used to it. It doesn’t bother me. I’m just gonna continue to just work and not get caught up in that stuff.” The level of maturity Cam shows when other players are clapping and amped up to defend him is remarkable for a young athlete, but necessary for someone of his talent level! This was the 4th consecutive year fans and media alike, got to see Cam Reddish play in Lewes and I asked him what his opinions were on the atmosphere and the event itself. “Honestly, this is one of the best atmosphere’s I have played in, in high school. The crowd is always into the game, fans everywhere.” The fans at Slam Dunk to the Beach love the Westtown School and their basketball team so I told Cam “This must feel almost like a home game for you guys. I was met by a smile and very simple, humble “yeah.” Next, I asked him what it is like to get to play with his younger brother Aaron, who is a freshman this year. He said, “it’s fun, I’m pushing him.” And just then his expression changed just a little bit has he broke into a laugh and showed us all he is still a kid just talking about his younger brother. Cam gets a kick out of messing with him just as any other older brother does. He went on to say “He is a phenomenal kid, and he is going to continue to push him.” ACC teams beware because Cam gave me a little emotion when asked about whether he keeps in contact with RJ [Barrett] a huge smile came to his face as he said “of course, I am probably going to go call him and talk to him right after this. We talk almost every single day and try to push one another. I love him, to death and I can’t wait to get to Duke to play together." For those of you who think Cam Reddish is exactly what he will be at Duke next year, think again. I asked him what Coach K and the staff have been telling him to work on. His response, a very simple “everything.” “All the small things.” After watching him these past few years, it is just the little things Cam needs to improve upon and he will be an instant-impact freshman for the Blue Devils next year |
